Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. Whether you have been kept awake by a throbbing toothache, chipped a tooth, lost a filling or noticed worrying swelling, our team at Harmoni Dental in Norbiton is here to help; usually the same day.

Led by Dr Andrew Bain, with nearly 30 years of clinical experience, we treat every emergency calmly and thoroughly. You don't need to be a registered patient, and nervous patients are always welcome. Call 0203 878 7465 and we'll get you seen and out of pain as quickly as possible.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you're experiencing any of the following, don't wait, call us. Prompt treatment relieves pain and often saves the tooth.

Severe Toothache

Persistent, throbbing or worsening pain, especially if it disturbs sleep or is not eased by painkillers, often signals infection or nerve damage that needs urgent attention.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A tooth knocked out by a fall or impact is a true emergency. Acting within the first hour gives the best chance of saving it (see our first-aid steps below).

Facial or Gum Swelling

Swelling in the face, jaw or gums can indicate a spreading infection or abscess. This should be assessed urgently to prevent it becoming more serious.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

A cracked, chipped or fractured tooth can be painful and leave sharp edges. We can relieve the discomfort and restore the tooth, often in a single visit.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown can expose sensitive tooth structure and cause sharp pain. We can re-cement or replace it and protect the tooth.

Dental Abscess

A painful, pus-filled swelling near a tooth or on the gum needs prompt treatment. Left untreated, the infection can spread and become dangerous.

Bleeding That Won't Stop

Ongoing bleeding after an extraction or injury to the mouth should be checked. We'll help you manage it and treat the underlying cause.

Soft Tissue Injury

Cuts or trauma to the lips, cheeks, gums or tongue, often alongside a broken tooth, may need attention to clean, protect and help them heal.

When to go straight to A&E or call 999

If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or rapidly spreading facial swelling (particularly around the eye or throat), this is a medical emergency. Go to your nearest A&E or call 999 immediately. For urgent out-of-hours dental advice when we're closed, you can also call NHS 111.

What to Do Right Now - First Aid While You Wait

Simple steps to ease pain and protect your tooth before your appointment. Always call us first so we can guide you.

Severe Toothache

  • Rinse gently with warm salty water to soothe the area and dislodge trapped food.
  • Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet (never place a painkiller directly against the gum).
  • Use a cold compress against your cheek for swelling.
  • Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food and drink until you're seen.

Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown, the white part, and never touch the root.
  • If dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saliva. Do not scrub or use soap.
  • Try to place it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth.
  • If you can't reposition it, keep it in a cup of milk and call us immediately, as time is critical.

Facial Swelling or Abscess

  • Call us straight away, as swelling needs urgent assessment.
  • Take painkillers as directed and use a cold compress for comfort.
  • Stay upright, including when resting, to ease pressure.
  • If swelling affects your breathing, swallowing or eye, go to A&E or call 999.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any tooth fragments in milk.
  • Cover a sharp edge with orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheek.
  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Avoid chewing on that side until we've seen you.

Lost Filling or Crown

  • Keep the crown safe and bring it with you, as it can often be re-cemented.
  • Clean the area gently and avoid chewing on that tooth.
  • Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth short-term.
  • Book an appointment promptly to prevent further damage or sensitivity.

Bleeding or Soft-Tissue Injury

  • Apply firm pressure with a clean, damp gauze or cloth for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Sit upright and avoid rinsing vigorously, which can restart bleeding.
  • Use a cold compress on the lip or cheek to limit swelling.
  • If bleeding won't stop, call us or seek urgent medical help.
